BSI Hosts "Membilang Bintang" Acting Workshop to Explore Storytelling, Theatre, and Sulawesi's Cultural Heritage

Makassar, June 6, 2026 – The English Language and Literature Study Program (BSI), Faculty of Adab and Humanities, UIN Alauddin Makassar, successfully held the “Membilang Bintang” Acting Workshop, an event that combined acting, storytelling, and cultural exploration. The workshop took place at Cafe Pagi Hari, Makassar, and was attended by BSI students who were eager to develop their creative and performance skills.

The event was initiated and hosted by students of the fourth-semester Drama Class under the supervision of Dr. Juliastuti, reflecting the program’s commitment to experiential learning and student-led academic activities. Through this workshop, students were given the opportunity not only to learn from experienced practitioners but also to gain hands-on experience in organizing a public educational event.
Carrying the theme "Menghidupkan Cerita, Membilang Bintang di Atas Panggung”" the workshop emphasized the role of theatre as more than a form of entertainment. Participants were encouraged to view acting as a medium for expressing ideas, preserving cultural narratives, and communicating meaningful human experiences.
The workshop featured two distinguished speakers. The first was Sukarno Hatta, M.M., an actor, performer, and director from Kala Teater Makassar. Drawing from his extensive experience in theatre and performance arts, he introduced participants to fundamental acting techniques, character development, emotional exploration, and improvisation. Through interactive exercises and practical demonstrations, participants learned how actors transform written stories into engaging stage performances.
The second speaker was Umar Thamrin, a lecturer in the English Language and Literature Study Program at UIN Alauddin Makassar and the author of Membilang Bintang. In his session, he discussed the historical and cultural inspirations behind the novel and highlighted the importance of local narratives in shaping cultural identity. By exploring the rich history and traditions of Sulawesi, participants gained a deeper appreciation of how literature and storytelling can preserve and promote cultural heritage.
Throughout the workshop, students took part in various activities, including storytelling exercises, character and emotion exploration, theatre games, improvisation sessions, and collaborative performance practices. These activities were designed to enhance creativity, communication skills, confidence, and teamwork while fostering a deeper understanding of the connection between literature, culture, and performance.
The event demonstrated how interdisciplinary learning can enrich students’ academic and personal development. By bringing together literature, theatre, history, and culture, the workshop provided a meaningful platform for participants to explore new perspectives and develop practical skills beyond the classroom.
Through initiatives such as the Membilang Bintang Acting Workshop, the English Language and Literature Study Program continues to encourage students to engage creatively with local culture, strengthen their communication skills, and contribute to the preservation of Indonesian cultural heritage through artistic expression.
